Dumbo, or as it’s known among New Yorkers, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods you can visit in the city. Technically, Dumbo is located in Brooklyn, but it’s only a short distance from C&J’s terminal at Port Authority in Manhattan. It’s easy to hop on the subway or take a Yellow Cab across the bridge to explore everything this gorgeous waterfront neighborhood has to offer. To help you plan out an unforgettable trip, we’ve compiled a quick guide to all the stops you won’t want to miss while you’re there.
Bring your camera and pack a pair of comfortable shoes: there’s a lot to see in Dumbo. From the magic of Jane’s Carousel to the stunning skyline view of Manhattan, you’re likely to fall in love with the neighborhood after just one visit. Ready to find out for yourself?
Snap a Picture at the Dumbo Archway
The awe-inspiring size of the Dumbo Archway draws in plenty of tourists—but don’t be scared away by crowds! On a typical day, the public plaza hosts food vendors, events, and sometimes even live performances. It’s completely worth the trip, and you’ll definitely want to take a picture under the 45-foot tall arched tunnel before you move onto your next stop.
Head down the block to The Shops at 145 Front Street, where you’ll find a collection of amazing boutiques and other vendors winding through the ground floor of the building. There, pick up a few unique gifts for the holiday season, or get yourself a few knickknacks to remember your trip by!
Spend a Sunny Day Outside
When the weather’s nice, why stay cooped up inside? Dumbo is home to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, an impressive 85-acre outdoor area that backs up to the water. There are walking and biking paths, gardens, playgrounds, the famous horse carousel, and of course, breathtaking views of the city. Depending on the season, there are a variety of different tours available to visitors, so be sure to explore what’s available before you go!
While you’re at the park, be sure to make a quick stop at Ample Hills Creamery for a scoop or two of their delectable ice cream (looking at you, marbled pumpkin and cheesecake ice cream with pieces of house-made graham cracker crumble).
Search for Treasure at the Brooklyn Flea
Throughout the warm months (April through October), Dumbo hosts a giant, open-air flea market just steps from the heart of the neighborhood. The Brooklyn Flea proudly boasts nearly 100 different vendors spread throughout several streets. On a beautiful day, it’s easy to spend hours browsing the vintage clothing, furniture, jewelry, and art. Prestigious magazines including Travel + Leisure have ranked Brooklyn Flea among the best in the world!
When you’re there, don’t miss the Smorgasburg market! Dozens of food vendors serve up treats like truffled mac n’ cheese, brisket sliders, or churro ice cream sandwiches! Luckily, Smorgasburg is open year-round so you can stop in for some warm food even in the dead of winter.
Sit Down for a Delicious Meal
Sometimes you’d rather enjoy a sit-down meal instead of snacking on bites of food from Smorgasburg. If that’s the case, you’re in the right neighborhood. Dumbo has a wide selection of restaurants that are suitable for all tastes. Vinegar Hill House is a popular destination for anyone who loves rustic meals in a refined setting. Diners can start their amazing meal with fresh bread and whipped butter and then move on to an incredible second course of cast iron chicken or a country pork chop with cheddar grits.
Atrium is another excellent dining experience in the center of Dumbo. This restaurant actually won Wine Spectator’s Best Award of Excellence in 2017 and 2018! Try a warm plate of gemelli pasta and let their expert sommelier pair your meal with an incredible wine.
